Milk Teeth by Amrita Mahale is, in many ways, a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Mumbai. Mumbai is a city which cradles dreams and nurses broken hearts, a city which rolls on despite of the many roadblocks it comes accross. This story spans from early seventies to late nineties. This is not an easy read in any way. As our country leans more and more to the right, this book is something that tries to confront our own demons and questions the validity of our own choices. As for me, I feel like Amrita Mahale has just shed her milk teeth with this one. I will be looking forward to more from her. Amrita Mahale's first novel Milk Teeth is an interesting work with a mixture of nostalgic childhood memories, the Bombay life, Indian politics, and three young people who are in search of their ideologies. A Mumbaikar herself, Mahale's thoughts run as fast as the local trains, stopping at different stations of her life at short intervals.
